Paul Goggins MP, 1953 – 2014
January 8, 2014
Like everyone who knew him, I am devastated to learn of Paul Goggins’ death.
Until we were first appointed together on the Intelligence and Security Committee in September 2010, we had probably only ever exchanged a few words. Since then we have spent a lot of time together and he had become a good friend. Always wise and insightful on political matters, he also took very seriously his Christian faith. He was a devoted family man and I had also had the great privilege of getting to know his delightful younger son, Dominic, in recent years.
Last summer when in Washington we walked together for an hour or so browsing through book stores in Georgetown and he talked enthusiastically of his retirement plans. He was absolutely thrilled a little over a year ago to become a grandfather for the first time and had intended to serve one more term in parliament and then look forward to a family-centred retirement. It is a tragedy for his wife, Wyn, and his three children that fate has intervened so cruelly.
I shall never forget Paul’s infectious and boyish enthusiasm for life and in particular his beloved Manchester City FC. He was a lovely man.
