Superfast broadband update
April 19, 2016
As many of you will be aware, Mark has been lobbying BT and the government for some time on the difficulties central London faces in obtaining super-fast broadband.
Unbelievably, despite being at the heart of the UK’s capital city, Cities of London and Westminster constituency has one of the lowest superfast coverage rates in the country. That’s why in October Mark welcomed the news that BT will be rolling out super-fast broadband to a further 40,000 properties in Westminster by the end of 2017. By this point 95% of the UK will have access to superfast broadband.
However, the work did not stop there and Mark has been keeping up the pressure by regularly liaising with BT on customer service issues brought to him by constituents and local businesses.
In a further meeting today, senior BT representatives acknowledged that they must do better on customer service and are working alongside communications regulator, Ofcom, to improve access to their network and increase competition. In addition, the broadband provider is reviewing its governance to address concerns over its independence and decision making, particularly with regards to investment.
Mark shall continue to work with colleagues in government and those in the communications industry to ensure that the concerns of local people are heard and action is taken.
