Visit to Azerbaijan

May 30, 2011

Visit to Azerbaijan Mark is currently the Chairman of the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Azerbaijan and in Whitsun recess, led a delegation of MPs and members of the House of Lords to Baku, Azerbaijan’s capital city.

The UK is the largest Western investor in Azerbaijan and the APPG is keen to strengthen relations between our two nations. Whilst Azerbaijan is known primarily for its reserves of oil and gas, the Azeris are anxious to expand beyond this reputation into high quality agricultural produce and tourism. A secular Muslim nation bounded by Iran, Russia, Georgia, Armenia and Turkey, Azerbaijan is a valued ally in this strategically important area of the world.

During the visit of the APPG, Mark met President Aliyev, a number of his Ministers and the British Ambassador. He also witnessed conditions in the camps of internally displaced people from the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, visited BP’s Sangachal oil facility and led a trip to the northern town of Guba. Guba is notable for having one of the largest communities of Jewish people outside Israel.
