Health Tourism

October 22, 2013

Mark was interviewed this morning on BBC Radio London by Paul Ross regarding Health Tourism. This is following Jeremy Hunt’s comments surrounding the government’s efforts to claw back more of the money we are owed for treating foreign nationals. Please find a summary of Mark’s thoughts below.

I am rightly proud that our NHS is free at the point of delivery for UK citizens but we do not have an international health service. In my twelve years as a central London MP, I have become well aware of health tourism at St Mary’s Paddington becoming ever more acute. It is my constituents that lose out despite being the ones that pay their taxes and contribute.

Jeremy Hunt’s initiative today comes as we debate the Immigration Bill and is the culmination of detailed statistical analysis of the extent of the problem (which has been peer reviewed by three other bodies) and is robust research we can rely on.
