Plans To Improve London's Healthcare

Plans are currently underway to create the UK’s first Academic Health Sciences Centre (AHSC) by merging the St Mary’s NHS Trust in Paddington with the Hammersmith Hospitals NHS Trust and forming a partnership with Imperial College.

The AHSC would bring together the delivery of healthcare services, teaching and research with the aim of providing the highest quality care to the community. The partners involved hope that the AHSC would become an international leader in medical research and education, attracting the world’s best healthcare professionals and becoming a driving force in the local economy.

The merger could set a new standard for healthcare in the UK, providing patients in west London with a world-class service and tackling healthcare inequalities. Normal services will be maintained, but under the AHSC, they could become more localised and convenient, providing patients with better results, more choice, and a greater range of specialists.

The partners hope that the AHSC will stimulate regeneration in and around its sites, improving the local environment and increasing investment into the area. No cuts to services or jobs are proposed, and there are currently no plans to close any Accident and Emergency departments or the nearby Charing Cross Hospital.

If the proposal gets the green light, it is hoped that the new organisation could become one of the top five AHSCs in the world for clinical excellence and research.

The public consultation for the proposals was launched on May 1, and comments from members of the community are being welcomed. Two public meetings to discuss the merger are planned on 6 June in Hammersmith and 20 June in Regent’s Park.
